Unmasking the Deception: Seeking Justice for Recent Events in The Hague
[Date: February 24, 2024]
An Open Letter to the Authorities and the People of the State of the Netherlands,

To His Excellency Jan van Zanen, Mayor of The Hague,
To His Excellency Mark Rutte, Prime Minister of the Netherlands,
To the Parliament of the State of the Netherlands,
To the Law Enforcement Authorities of the State of the Netherlands, To the People of the State of the Netherlands,

With a profound sense of duty and determination, I address you concerning recent events that have unfolded within the boundaries of your esteemed city, The Hague. In our collective pursuit of justice, truth, and accountability, it becomes imperative to confront the troubling incidents that occurred during the PFDJ festival on February 17, 2024.

The occurrences of recent days have cast a pall over The Hague, as clashes erupted, leading to attacks on law enforcement officers and the destruction of public property. Amidst this chaos, swift accusations have been leveled at the Birged Nihamedu, a youth movement advocating for justice and change in Eritrea. However, I implore you to adopt a broader perspective and delve into the complexities of the situation.

The Birged Nihamedu stands as a symbol of hope for the Eritrean people, both within their homeland and across the diaspora. Comprised of passionate youths from diverse backgrounds, this movement ardently seeks to dismantle the oppressive regime that has plagued Eritrea for far too long. Their grievances stem not from malice but from a deepseated yearning for freedom, democracy, and human rights.

Conversely, it behooves us to scrutinize the actions and motivations of the People's Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ) and its adherents. Operating under the guise of cultural or community groups, these individuals exhibit a vested interest in perpetuating the status quo, regardless of the suffering endured by the Eritrean people. Their influence within diaspora communities often eclipses dissenting voices, perpetuating a climate of fear and intimidation.

The recent disturbances in The Hague prompt us to question the true instigators behind the violence. Were these actions truly orchestrated by members of Birged Nihamedu, or could they be attributed to PFDJ supporters posing as opposition forces? A thorough examination of the evidence suggests that the latter scenario warrants serious consideration.

The timing and context of the clashes offer significant insights. As international scrutiny intensifies on Eritrea's flagrant human rights abuses, the regime and its supporters may resort to desperate measures to divert attention from their atrocities. The violent acts witnessed in The Hague serve as a stark reminder of the lengths to which oppressors will go to suppress dissent and maintain their grip on power.

As we navigate these turbulent waters, it is imperative that we uphold the principles of justice, accountability, and the rule of law. I implore His Excellency the Mayor of The Hague, His Excellency the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, and the esteemed members of parliament to launch a thorough and impartial investigation into the recent events. Only through a transparent and unbiased inquiry can we unearth the truth and hold those responsible accountable for their actions.

To the people of the State of the Netherlands, I extend my heartfelt appreciation for your unwavering commitment to upholding justice and human rights. Your solidarity with the oppressed serves as a beacon of hope in these trying times. Let us stand united in sympathy with the Eritrean people as they strive for a future characterized by freedom, dignity, and equality.

In conclusion, I urge you to heed the call for justice and align yourselves with the right side of history. The journey to a better world begins with holding oppressors accountable and amplifying the voices of the oppressed. Together, let us endeavor towards a future where justice prevails and freedom reigns supreme.

Sincerely, Haile Kiflai, Canada.
