When I first embarked on my research on the histories of Islam and Muslims in Eritrea in the mid to late 1990s there were only a handful of publications on the subject. The few available English and other European language works were outdated, both in terms of the information that they provided and their general approach to the topic. And though the independence of Eritrea in the early 1990s spurred a small flurry of publications during that decade, those focusing on Islam and Muslims were mostly written in Arabic and printed in several cities across the Middle East (I vividly remember acquiring a number of books in Cairo in 2000). These publications were therefore less accessible to many otherwise interested potential readers, both in Eritrea and outside it. That post-Independence momentum and excitement was sustained for some time. The opening-up of the country to research after long decades allowed researchers, including myself, to conduct fieldwork studies, consult archival collections in Eritrea and unearth new historically valuable sources. The fruits of those efforts were published in a number of books and articles that presented new information and insight on the characteristics and trajectories of Islam in Eritrea. Read more:

Ismael Mukhtar: Milestones in the History of Islam in Eritrea
Ismael Ibrahim Mukhtar is a renowned freelance researcher in Islamic and Eritrean history. Born and raised in Asmara, Mukhtar has published several articles on the topic in both Arabic and English. In 2021, he published his first book, titled Manitoba Muslims: A History of Resilience and Growth, which focuses on the history of Canadian Manitoban Muslims. His next book, "Milestones in the History of Islam in Eritrea," is expected to be released in the summer of 2023. He holds a degree from the University of Manitoba Faculty of Management and is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation holder. Mukhtar is an honorary board member of the Eritrean Muslim Council of North America.
