SEPTEMBER 18TH

And the young Eritrean generation

Eritrean Prisoners

This we believe! September 18th And the young Eritrean generation

Whenever we think about heroic acts – we Eritreans – turn towards our own people and our Freedom Fighters. In other societies, a hero might be a person that runs towards a building in flames to save strangers. Such heroic acts are rare, but they happen when performed by non-job-related personnel. Sometimes taking risks for others, while “the others” could be your own people or some opportunists is also part of our lives.

These young Eritreans organizing the march for September 18th are –first and foremost - they own heroes. Their task is far more complex that they might make it look, it involves risks. It commands leaving opportunities to make money through their hard-acquired education, it is a dangerous road filled with valor and boldness. These young Eritreans never brag about their accomplishments. For, at each time they raise the bar to reach higher achievements. They do not look for personal power, but rather they try to restore power to the people. They take a vertical jump to the depths of life and discover what is more dear to the future of our country. This is what makes them true heroes! In fairy tales, a man needs to prove his heroic side by killing a beast spluttering fire at him. A princess must show grace, femininity and submissiveness. These young Eritreans – females and males alike - are the true princesses and heroes that proved to a much more powerful force that they will not stop struggling and together they are fighting forces spitting fire at them and slandering their names. Nothing seems to stop them until they bring back the Eritrea their parents fought for, the country Eritrean prisoners walked towards jails of no return and the Eritrea our Martyrs died for!

Slaying dragons and fighting giants is what they ask us to bring back on each September 18th until true freedom for our land and people is achieved. Their road to heroism is to eliminate wrong concepts and bring up our innermost courage of being fully empowered, authentic and honest Eritreans! No matter how much bigger the forces trying to crash us are! This generation is guiding us towards the path of integrity and justice!

The aspects they lay in front of our eyes are undeniable! They are heroes that no father or mother presented them with funds belonging to the people! These young Eritreans work more than one job, attend night classes and graduate on their own rights. No father holding power provided a fictitious pilot degree to them and no influential mother looked away while young Eritreans languish in hidden jails or pregnant Eritrean mothers die at high seas! The secrecy of the arrests on September 18, 2001 and the “no-trial/no-comments” atmosphere leaves Eritreans tangled in pain and arbitrary arrests only add to our anguish.

This is a generation composed of honest Eritreans, is the light that will walk us out of the dark tunnel! They are their own heroes by a mile! They tell us that heroism is not for sale and cannot be a bequest, unless we do our part. Some among them are kids born in Sahel that saw their own parents picking up a weapon for love of people and love for Eritrea. Their parents earned their kids’ respect and now, we have to earn this generation’s respect by setting an example of lending them support and humbleness in a peaceful transition of power!

Critical questions is all they ask us. Moreover, they tell us to be relevant to our standing and to become our own heroes, sometimes all over again! To build a common character in structuring a strong and durable wall around our borders and to provide open doors to peaceful neighboring countries, as long as they respect Eritrea right to exists! They are placing the first brick. To paraphrase one of our Martyrs: “Peace is a wall we will all create by building it brick-by-brick together" {TM}

This generation of Eritreans acquired - from previous Eritrean generations - the conscience to resolve inner conflicts, to hold hands and set back our ideals for Eritrea to the highest level. Sometimes, they stir our conscience, some other times we simply need to line up behind them, so they could walk beside us.

This generation is not daydreaming. They are acting! They have mastered the courage to share heroism and to teach us humbleness. They stand up to the surrounding fears and walk beyond it. They clearly marked the road.

Let us follow them and be grateful. For, proud of them we truly are!
