A thank you to

Ahmed Kaissi

A thank you to Ahmed Kaissi.

Ahmed:

Veterans like you showed us the strength to face challenges with confidence and love for country. By listening to this interview, I sense your wisdom to choose your words all while informing us about the negative and positive. You gave credit to the same leader that threw you in jail for no reason and prevented you from savoring the walk into a free Asmara. A right you earned with all the years in the battlefields and the years you sacrificed so we – the Eritrean people- could be free.

I want to personally thank you for elaborating on the role of women in our struggle and today's government life. Many Eritrean women were laid off once we gained independence and some left voluntarily; the majority that stayed were given survival jobs. This showed a severe segregation by gender and created a financial dependency for women, with a life that rotated only around family and marriage.

Eritrean women played the most important role in our liberation war; they gave their sons, their daughters and their husbands, took over the survival of the family structure. Many joined the battlefields and pushed the enemy out of our land while leading battalions and leading sophisticated intelligence operations.

Today Eritrean female Veterans encounter roadblocks when all they expected – rightfully so – was to be part of a government in the making, greater leading roles and social equality.

I wish you a journey of peace and I know you will always stop along to help any human being, in particular Eritreans. Please remember how proud we are about you and all Eritrean Veterans.

I hope to be for you - and all Eritrean Veterans like you - the cheering voice and the friend to watch your back. Know that you are not fighting alone in creating the Eritrea we all paid a price for.

With gratitude,

Kiki Tzeggai
